Medieval and Renaissan democratic institutions were developed throughout Europe, in Scandinavia, France, Germany, Italy, and England. Medieval political thought interconnected with religion, especially when Catholic doctrine and the new ideas of the Protestant Reformation contributed to abstract theories. Disagreements between crown and church had the potential to disrupt government and to crush internal opposition, with the result that religious and political tensions began to shape national governments.
